Caster Semenya a Late Addition to Doha 800-Meter FieldPublished by
Caster Semenya to Race 800 Meters at Doha Diamond League MeetingBy Adam Kopet Caster Semenya is a late addition to the 800-meter field at Friday's Doha Diamond League meeting. The South African's participation comes two days after her appeal of the IAAF's new regulations governing the female classification of athletes to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was denied. Those regulations are set to go into effect next week. The regulations specifically target the events ranging from 400 meters to the mile. Semenya has been extending her range this year, racing several times over 5,000 meters. Last week she defeated Dominique Scott to win the 5,000 meters at the South African Championships. With the new regulations set to go into effect next week, the Doha Diamond League meeting is Semenya's last chance to compete in her signature event without having to undergo hormone treatment. It is unclear what Semenya will do in the future. She could try to find success at longer distances, but a recent tweet hinted that she may instead retire.
Her third option would be to chemically reduce her testosterone levels to meet the new IAAF regulations, however, that is an unlikely outcome. Regardless of the path Semenya takes in the future, she will at least race the 800 meters one last time. More news |
